Port of Kalama is now accepting applications for Grounds Keeper Position

The Port of Kalama is accepting applications/resumes for the position of Grounds Keeper.  All applications must be received by 5:00 PM Monday, December 28, 2015 at the Port of Kalama office at 110 W Marine Drive, Kalama, WA 98625. This position requires a high school diploma, have the ability to speak, read, write, and understand English, and have a minimum (5) years of experience in maintaining  parks, golf courses or sports complexes in turf management; tree, shrub, and plant maintenance; installing and repairing irrigation; and operating zero turn and self-contained hydraulic driven contour mowers. The salary range is between $40,000 – $48,000 per year plus benefits.

Port of Kalama named Washington State Port of the Year

The Washington Public Ports Association has honored the Port of Kalama with the President’s Port of the Year Award for combining long-term vision and innovative planning to create jobs and improve the community’s quality of life. Port of Kalama commissioners received the award at the WPPA annual meeting recently in Seattle, Washington.

The Port of Kalama this year celebrates an extensive list of awards, recognition, community infrastructure projects, new contracts and acclaim as an approachable, business-friendly climate for businesses of all sizes

  • Several Port businesses have chosen to expand their operations and several new businesses now call the Port of Kalama ‘home;’
  • New infrastructure projects like the new 24-acre recreational facility, Haydu Park, were completed in 2015;
  • Among numerous awards, the Port earned the Pathways 2020 Community Champions Award for Economic Vitality, which awards organizations that excel at creating jobs, employee wellness, training, employable skills, new or expanding business, transportation, financial security, reducing poverty, and higher wages.

The City of Kalama Planning Commission recently approved the Port of Kalama’s Master Plan to develop 70 acres of Port property to make way for the anticipated Spencer Creek Business Park. The City and Port together earned the 2014 Governor’s Smart Communities Award for their collaboration on planning the multi-use business property which is expected to boost the region’s available commercial property, economy and job opportunities while strengthening the city’s revenue base. Port of Kalama makes way for commercial development with approval of Spencer Creek Business Park Master Plan

The City of Kalama Planning Commission has approved the Port of Kalama’s Master Plan to develop 70 acres of Port property to make way for the anticipated Spencer Creek Business Park. The City and Port together earned the 2014 Governor’s Smart Communities Award for their collaboration on planning the multi-use business property which is expected to boost the region’s available commercial property, economy and job opportunities while strengthening the city’s revenue base.

The Spencer Creek Business Park will encompass about 70 acres (3 million square feet) and over 500,000 square feet of space when built-out. The mix of light industrial, office, commercial and retail uses is a boon for a region lacking in developable land. The proposed site uses may include:

  • Office/flex
  • Light industrial
  • Commercial/retail
  • Hotel
  • Convenience store
  • Dining

The Port of Kalama and City of Kalama, who worked together to craft a new City Code to enable the flexible, multipurpose development, will collaborate now on the permitting processes for developing the site infrastructure. An economic evaluation is pending to develop the facility in order to create jobs and local revenue in an environmentally responsible fashion.

“This annexation offers terrific benefits to the city and our residents as it expands Kalama’s tax base. We can expect a substantial economic impact and additional funds for important city projects going forward,” said Mayor Pete Poulsen, City of Kalama.  “This partnership between the City and the Port is an excellent example of what can be accomplished with a shared common vision for the future of this fine community.”

 

The Port envisions a 20-year build-out that started with the creation of a regional recreational draw, Haydu Park.  New business activity will significantly increase employment opportunities and add millions of dollars to local tax revenue rolls. “The City and the Port have worked together to create common planning goals for future development, and we’ve created a road map for establishing a vibrant mixed-use district,” continues Mayor Poulsen.

“The development of this business center—and expansion of neighboring recreational facilities at Haydu Park—support our strategy for economic growth in the Cowlitz region and position Kalama as a relocation destination for diverse industries,” says Randy Sweet, Commission President, Port of Kalama.

Port of Kalama celebrates new business & economic vitality

Just 30 minutes north of Portland, Oregon, business and community development are booming at the Port of Kalama. A round-up of recent news headlines from the Port of Kalama tells the tale of economic development, civic pride and a prosperous business community.

Port of Kalama welcomes new business

  • The Port completed an agreement with Northwest Innovation Works to build a $1.8 billion natural gas to methanol conversion facility that is expected to create approximately 200 new jobs when completed. The company recently moved its corporate headquarters and operations to the Port.
  • One of the Pacific Northwest’s largest service providers to the forest products industry, Christiansen Enterprises LLC, grew 30% a year since moving to Port of Kalama in 2013 and expanded its facilities to include fabrication. The company signed a lease for 20,000 square foot facility, added fabrication services and hired seven new employees.
  • Eco-friendly corrugated crate manufacturer, Depin Inc., moves operations from Salem, Oregon to Kalama, leasing 12,000 square feet to expand operations between key markets, Portland and Seattle. The company has hired 20 new employees.
  • All American Container recently extended the lease on their 33,000 square-foot warehouse at the Kalama River Industrial Park. One of the country’s largest suppliers of glass, plastic, and metal containers, AAC serves local, regional—even international industries.

 

“Kalama’s location is excellent, with a deep berth and easy access to the shipping channel,” said Simon Zhang, chief executive officer, Northwest Innovation Works. “From the very first meeting, the Port of Kalama demonstrated that they are open for business. They are committed to their mission of generating economic growth for Kalama and have been excellent partners, introducing us to the community and working with us as we go through the permitting process and move toward construction.”

Port of Kalama infrastructure improvements serve community

  • The Port’s much-anticipated 24-acre recreational facility, Haydu Park, opened in July. New baseball & softball fields, soccer fields, a horse riding arena, restrooms & concession stand, tennis courts, basketball courts, on-site parking, and an expo area available for reservations by the general public are just some of the premier features of Haydu Park. The facility also includes trails and access to several thousand feet of Kalama River frontage for fishing, swimming and boating.
  • The Port of Kalama was recently awarded a federal grant by the US Department of Homeland Security to enhance security infrastructure at the North Port Marine Terminal with video surveillance cameras, increased lighting at facilities, installation of new fencing and automated gates.
  • Master planning of East Port is complete and over time will usher in the multi-use Spencer Creek Business Center for a mix of light industrial, office, commercial and retail uses.
  • Cowlitz County granted $30,000 for the Port of Kalama Trail Improvement, which enables the Port to improve pedestrian and vehicle separation barriers and meridians along West Marine Drive.
  • Last year the Port of Kalama saw Temco’s completion of a $200 million renovation of their grain elevator while the Port managed the construction of new Administrative Offices and Interpretive Center.

Port of Kalama honored with awards for economic vitality

  • The Port of Kalama has been honored with the Pathways 2020 Community Champions Award for Economic Vitality. The ‘economic vitality’ category awards organizations that excel at creating jobs, employee wellness, training, employable skills, new or expanding business, transportation, financial security, reducing poverty, and higher wages.
  • The Washington State Department of Ecology has awarded the Port of Kalama Wastewater Treatment Plant with the 2014 Outstanding Performance Award. Port of Kalama is recognized as one of the top performers for full compliance with the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit.
  • Port of Kalamaalong with strategic partner City of Kalamawas recognized for their collaboration on the annexation of 260 acres of Port property for both business and recreational purposes.  The annexation makes way for the Spencer Creek Business Park and the recently completed recreational facility, Haydu Park.
  • The Western Dredging Association (WEDA) has awarded the Port of Kalama with the top 2014 Environmental Excellence Award in the navigation dredging category. The Port was recognized with the top honor for the TEMCO Berth Maintenance Dredging and In-water Flow-lane Placement project.

Next up: Port of Kalama makes way for commercial development

The Port of Kalama has commenced development of the 70-acre Spencer Creek Business Park, located north of Kalama River Road right off of Interstate 5. The Spencer Creek Business Park will support a mix of light industrial, office, commercial and retail uses including:

  • Light industrial
  • Commercial/retail
  • Hotel
  • Convenience store
  • Dining

 

Preliminary work at Spencer Creek Business Park includes filling and grading, installation of storm water treatment systems, and road improvements to make way for new commercial development. While East Port will be built out over many years, business park construction and operational activities are projected to support more than 1,000 jobs and millions of dollars in new local economic activity.

Office Building Cladding Project Update #3

Removal of the siding and roof structure have been completed. New metal siding and masonry accents will be added in the next three weeks, followed by installation of the new roof within the first two weeks of October. The estimated completion date of this project is the third week of October. Public restrooms remain open. No traffic modifications expected.

Office Building Cladding Project Update #2

The exterior facelift is underway at the former Port of Kalama administrative offices. JH Kelly, LLC will complete siding removal the week of August 24th.  New roof trusses will be set in place, Friday, August 28th.  This work will require a crane and there will be intermittent traffic delays, particularly in the morning.

The project is expected to continue through the fall. The building, which was constructed in 1975 and expanded in 1991, will share the same exterior features as the Port’s new administrative offices. The Port recently constructed—and moved into—the new administrative building which replicates a traditional waterfront warehouse of the 1800s. To create some design consistency, the exterior and roofing of this building will be treated similarly.

Office Building Cladding Project Update #1

Regarding the exterior facelift at the former administrative office, JH Kelly, LLC is currently removing the existing siding. There are large plastic barriers installed to prevent debris escape and the process of the siding removal is expected to continue through August.

Expect no road closures.
