Taryn Nelson selected to represent District 1, filling the seat held by former Commissioner Randy Sweet
Kalama, WA – During Wednesday’s regular scheduled meeting, the Port’s Board of Commissioners selected Taryn Nelson to fill the vacant District 1 Commission seat. Ms. Nelson was selected from a pool of four residents from District 1, each of whom participated in interviews during a special commission meeting held in February. She will fill the remaining two years of former Commissioner Sweet’s regular term. Commissioners are elected to six-year terms.
“We were fortunate to have a slate of outstanding residents who stepped forward,” said Commission President Troy Stariha. “In the end, we felt Taryn Nelson would be of tremendous value to the Port.”
Regarding her selection, Ms. Nelson said, “I want to thank the Commissioners for the confidence they have placed in me for the next two years. I have much to learn and hope to earn the trust and support of voters along the way. I’m very excited to serve my hometown in a new way and am looking forward to the challenge.”
Ms. Nelson’s appointment to the Commission comes during a year that will see continued growth at the Port of Kalama, including construction of the long-awaited pedestrian overpass replacement, and a substantial rail expansion project of the TEMCO grain elevator.
The Board of Commissioners sets policy and strategic direction for the Port. Regular meetings are held at 5:30 pm on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month.
